Christmas Angel

We love watching movies. On Sundays, we try to pick one that is inspiring for the day and to get us motivated for the next week. The reason I'm telling you that is because we watched one today that I thought was worth sharing. It's called Christmas Angel. It came out in 2009 and is a great movie for this time of year. Here's the basic plot summary from IMDB:

"Ashley has been on her own all her life. She feels even more alone this Christmas as she searches fruitlessly for a job. The seasonal cheer around her only rubs salt in her wounds as she scrapes by to support herself and her dog, Dash. But her neighbor, Nick, knows exactly what to do. He offers her a job, to be his assistant in the best work-helping others. There's one catch that Ashley must honor though-she can't tell anyone that her new boss is a sort of Secret Santa, helping others anonymously. Through her new job, Ashley meets Will, a writer for a business magazine who uncovers what Ashley is doing, and more importantly, Nick's involvement. As Ashley and Nick help people in need, Ashley tries to protect Nick's secret, and her own heart, while Will must weigh the consequences of what he does."

It's a great movie about Christmas and giving. One man decides to go out of his way to help those around him and changes their lives. He has the attitude that everyone is in need of something, we just need to stop and pay attention to the needs of others. (The movie is on Hulu and probably elsewhere if you want to watch it, it's awesome.) "Be kind, everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle." I think that's a great reminder, especially around this time of year. To all of you, each fighting your own battle... you are loved. You are appreciated. What you do does matter. Someone you know needs you to love them unconditionally. Someone around you needs to see your smile. Someone you love is struggling and needs you to only show that you care about them. You're enough. You do enough. You are perfectly the only you, no one else compares. Be you.

Watching this movie reminded me of an experience that Bryce and I had around Christmas in the first year that we were married. Like others, we have our own struggles and battles. That year, we had ups and downs with financial stuff. In the month right after we got married, Bryce got a call from someone he worked with at Ruby Tuesday. They said that the restaurant was closing and all the employees were going to lose their jobs. We were both stunned by the out-of-the-blue news. To put it simply, we were about to embark on the thrift train. Thanks to some savings and school grants, we were able to pay bills and have the basic needs taken care of. I can't write this without adding that we would've been lost without the blessings of tithing. The blessings were simple and significant to us, and seemed to come at the right time. We felt very blessed to be provided for in that tough time without a job. (Thankfully, Bryce was able to get a part-time teaching job through CES/seminary later that year.) Anyway, we had an experience with a "Christmas angel" near that year's Christmas. One night we heard the doorbell... we looked outside and there was no one there, but we saw that someone had left a jar of coins. We were amazed and so grateful that someone had thought of us. We still don't know who it was, but whoever you are, thank you soooo much. That is an experience that we will always remember. The Lord is aware of each person and their needs, and sometimes he sends another to let you know that He is aware of you. I'm grateful for each tender mercy from the Lord. His love is infinite and unconditional for each of us. Even when life is a bit tough or memories are hard to bear, it's comforting to know that God and the love that He has for us will always be there. Keep your chin up, you're amazing.

P.S.- Happy Anniversary to my sweet amazing husband, Bryce Skelton! ♥ 12/30/10. He is my everything and I'm so grateful that God let me meet him all those years ago. I feel blessed to be married to the most wonderful man that I know. He's my best friend and he makes me laugh every day. Marriage is so sacred and one of the greatest blessings that God has given us. :]
I love you Bryce!

Let me sum up.

We went to a hockey game with some of Bryce's family while they were up in SLC for Thanksgiving. Hockey is fun to watch, especially with all the intensity/fights in the arena. One of our favorite quotes from one of the other fans was, "Drop the puck, chubby!"  and the same guy called the referee Petey a few times, so we thought maybe he knows him haha. Also, during a break in the game, there was a kiss cam to find couples in the crowd for the big screens. The camera people zoomed in on Pete and Aeme and they kissed, but sitting right next to them was Tyler... making a funny almost disgusted face, probably showing off for the camera haha wish we had a picture of that moment.

^ Some of the family

Tyler left on his mission! To Mississippi. We were glad to spend time with the family and see him before he left for the MTC. We know he'll be a great missionary, and it sounds like he's enjoying his mission so far.

We had fun seeing some of the Mills at the family adult Christmas party! The white elephant gift exchange was a bit lengthy and silly, but we came away with some cute decorations. The party planners (Frank and Lavon, I think) did a great job, simple and amazing. It was great to see everyone that was there :-)

We found Monopoly at Walmart for pretty cheap, so we decided to get it. I guess we started a new holiday tradition... play monopoly until unreasonable hours of the night while listening to Christmas music!

I thought that this Christmas present that Bryce got online was pretty funny... haha

(Picture from one of our fun date nights, we got to see Frozen and eat some yummy In and Out Burgers!) Oh yeah, and it snows a lot. We're getting used to it, but it's definitely colder than we're used to. Yay for snow shovels and ice-melter salt stuff... And yay for heaters and warm clothes. Anyway...

We were super excited and determined to try and find a bigger Christmas tree this year, because last year we just used a little bitty one. Bryce found an awesome one at Savers thrift store. Yay!  It had some lights out for a while, but Bryce found a light fixer thing and he made the tree all bright and lovely again!

(Pajama present on Christmas eve tradition... with our lil' tree... we got some comfy pj's,woo!) Christmas was a fun day!

And a random picture of a food we just discovered. "Buckeyes"  ... incredibly rich delicious and a kind of easy recipe if you have a million powdered sugar. Here's a link to someone's recipe if you want to try these bad boys. http://allrecipes.com/recipe/buckeyes-i/

Merry Christmas and happy holidays all you cool people!

Happy December!

It's not Christmas yet, but Merry Christmas to you, our amazing family and friends! I read a quote somewhere that said "Today is next year's Christmas memories, make it one that you will always cherish."     I don't know about anyone else, but sometimes in the holiday season... I forget to stop and think. December is a busy month with all the ward/work/family parties, college finals for some, work, and all the other things that seem to happen right near Christmas. It's good to recognize that the time to enjoy Christmas is right now, and we don't have to overwhelm ourselves with the cultural holiday to-do's. The messages in our church today had a lot to do with remembering the true meaning of Christmas. We celebrate the Savior's birth, but we also celebrate His life and His love for us. He is the reason that we can have hope and happiness, and He has already given us the greatest gift.  Everything about Christmas can be symbolic and turn us towards Christ. When I realize that, and when I stop and think, Christmas becomes more meaningful and Christmas spirity.  We feel extremely grateful to have such incredible family and friends. You all mean a lot to us and we hope you're doing well wherever you are!

(On a side note... and definitely off topic haha... we won some tickets to go and see The Hobbit and Frozen this month. They are awesome movies, we recommend them!) What are some of your favorite holiday movies and traditions? We're beginning to make our own traditions and it's fun to celebrate Christmas in our first home that we plan to live in for longer than a year yay! We've moved once every year since we got married and it feels great to live in a nice place that we can stay in for a while. We're grateful to be in an amazing ward and have great neighbors. (On another side note, I'm so so proud of Bryce for doing so great in all of his college classes this semester. He is working full time and working on his Master's degree at the same time. He spent a lot of time writing quite a few papers for his finals this month, and he got A's in his classes. He amazes me evvvery-day. I'm grateful to be married to the most amazing man I know.)
 Anyways, Merry Christmas everyone!
We hope your 2013 has been great and that you have a happy New Year!

Love, Bryce and Tiah...

How We Met

This December, we'll celebrate our 3rd anniversary. It's fun to look back and remember all that has happened. We haven't really written down much about how we met or our story, so we're going to throw some memories into a few blog posts mainly so that we can remember. If you're at all interested in our story, here it is from both of our perspectives ;)  (More to come)

When/where we met:
T-We met at Dixie State College. We had a class together the Spring semester of 2010, it was Child Development taught by the amazing instructor Prof. Eicher. Bryce was about to graduate with his associate's degree and was already accepted into either BYU or USU. (I'm getting ahead of myself, but that was one thing that really made me fall in love with Bryce, he chose to stay at Dixie after we met even though he was accepted into other great schools.) So at the beginning of the semester, I wanted to switch out of this class because there were a lot of assignments I didn't know if I could do well. After thinking about it, I had a strong feeling that I needed to stick it out and stay in the class. (I'm way glad I did!) There were definitely more girls in that class than boys. Bryce and I sat at different tables and didn't really talk or anything for the first part of the semester. We both had been in complicated and tough relationships, and we were to the point where we didn't want to worry about dating anymore and wanted to just let the Lord guide us to the right one when the time was more right. (We feel like that was an important point for us both to reach before we could actually meet.)
I noticed Bryce right away, he and his friend were the class clowns and they made every day in that class more fun. They always made everyone laugh, and sometimes needed quieting down from the professor. Bryce and I had a few opportunities to talk out in the hall during class because the professor gave us breaks after we learned about dishabituation. Bryce would always take advantage of the short breaks with his friend Justin and go get a drink. I wanted any reason to cross paths with him, so I would go out in the hall as well to get a drink. I remember Bryce and his friend teasing me about talking to myself when I was leaving a voice message for my dad from my phone. By then, I already had a secret crush on Bryce and he gave me butterflies just by talking to me.

One day, I was walking to institute from that class and I felt like there was someone walking behind me. I turned around to look real quick and noticed that it was Bryce. I became super giddy and blurted out "Sorry, I was pretending that you weren't behind me!" I meant to say something like, sorry I didn't know you were behind me or I would've stopped to talk to you hahaha.... but yeah foot in mouth moment. Bryce was sweet and just teased me about ignoring him and we talked for a bit before we walked separate ways. I was sooo excited and nervous that he had taken the time to talk to me! He made me feel giddy from that point on. I looked forward to that class just so that I could see him. Ironic story time... I knew his sister Aubree from high school and I had written on her fb wall without even connecting that they were related. Bryce commented on my post saying something like "Be careful Aubree, Tiah will walk in front of you and pretend that you're not behind her." Aubree was super confused and said "I don't know what he's talking about, sorry Tiah." I was confused until I put it together that Bryce was her brother. We became facebook friends and we joked that I was his 300th friend, and he said that he'd bring me a prize the next time we had class. ;) He was super cute to bring me a juice box and I brought him a rice crispy treat. He ate his treat right away and I put mine in my backpack so that I could save it... it stayed in the fridge for a while haha but I liked keeping it because it reminded me of him heehee.

Anyway, during class the rest of the semester, we had a few opportunities to talk to each other. I thought it was cute that I would catch Bryce looking over at me. I sat across the room, but my seat faced him so I could look over at him any time I wanted. It would make my heart jump when I'd see him looking over at me too. I also remember quite a few times when Bryce would walk past me to staple/hole punch his papers ;) we were definitely becoming interested in each other. I know for sure that I was already interested in Bryce. I thought that he was the most handsome guy I'd ever seen, and I'll always feel that way. :) I was always excited when he'd come to class and whenever he'd talk to me. I was impressed that he would wear his church clothes to class some days, and when the professor would ask why he was dressed up, he wasn't afraid to say that he was going to the temple after class. He's always been a great example to me, and I've always been glad that we have similar beliefs. I also thought it was cute that he would wear bright colored clothes. During the semester, the people at his table asked me why I hadn't sat at their cool table, probably because my table was empty before class started one day. I joked back, and they said "Well someday you're going to have to tell your grandkids why you didn't sit at the cool table in this class." Ironic haha. That was a fun class, and a great place for Bryce and I to get to know each other in a simple way. I've been falling for him since we met and I still fall for him every day. After reading his version, I'm reminded how fast we fell for each other. He has always made me laugh and has always taken the time to make me feel special and needed. I'm so grateful for Bryce and for the amazing person that he is.

B: As I was finishing my associate's degree at Dixie State, I planned to go to USU to get my degree in family studies. In preparation for that, I took as many classes as I could from the family sciences department at Dixie. Child Development was one of these classes. I was in a class full of all girls except for Justin Gish and myself. Justin and I sat at the same table and were always having a great time in class. We joked and laughed almost nonstop, which at times called for correction from the teacher, Tim Eicher. At the time, I was slowly coming out of a period of discouragement and frustration caused by a bad relationship. I remember often walking across campus and noting the lack of desire to pursue any kind of relationship with any girl. Due to my dwindling relationship and the lack of any tempting prospects, I remember feeling content with taking a break from girls. This feeling was confirmed as I continued to watch for any girl to cross my path to whom I was attracted and day after day found none.
It was during this time of daily reaffirmation that there was no girl around worth pursuing that I enrolled in the child development class. I don't know how long I had been in the class at the time, but I do remember one day seeing her for the first time. What I remember about the first time I saw Tiah was that she was walking out of the room at the end of class in a crowd of people, her long brown hair curled to the middle of her back, she wore a blue hooded sweater and a headband, and I was smitten. I remember wondering how I had never seen her in class before and where she had come from. I left class with new hope that there was at least one woman in the world who I could see myself loving. From that point on, this poor young lady must have been suspicious of my no less than one zillion "sneaky" glances in her direction every class. Unfortunately, my seat at my table faced the opposite way of where she was sitting and her seat directly faced my back, so there was virtually no way of sneaking a peak of her without her noticing. Recognizing this fact, however, was still not enough to keep me from trying to keep my repeated glances as discrete as possible. I began to wonder whether she had discovered my obsession as I often found that when I looked at her, she was looking right back at me!
During the initial period of twitterpation, the days between child development class seemed eternally long. Weekends nearly killed me. No disappointment could compare with the days she or I missed class. I counted all my time in terms of when I would get to see her again. I hoped on the weekends to somehow bump into her somewhere. We had occasions here or there for a brief exchanges, any longer than brief would have been too impossibly long to conceal from her how absolutely crazy I was about her.
I had an institute on the other side of campus right after our class together. I would try different routes of getting there hoping to pass by her on her way to wherever she was going. One day as I climbed the stairs of the institute to attend my class, she came around the corner at the top of the stairs with some classmates. I don't know if she could sense what kind of excitement this chance encounter had caused in my heart. If she couldn't tell, I am not sure how, because I felt as if my attraction to her (borderline obsession) was bursting from every inch of me. I think I somehow managed to attempt a play-it-cool attitude in spite of the twirly whirlies going on inside me. Although I had always enjoyed institute, I now attended with I heightened level of anticipation, that maybe I would see her.
One day after child development I came out of the building from the opposite side and saw her walking down a set of stairs. With my brisk-but-hopefully-not-too-obvious speed walking, I caught up to her. Hearing my footsteps, she turned and teased that she had been pretending not to know who was following her and we talked for a short section of sidewalk. From this point on, I always parked in the lower parking lot so that I could have the chance of running into her after class.
After we separated at the end of our walk, I instantly missed her. A secret crush was no longer good enough, I needed a plan. And what better place to start than Facebook. I went home and searched every form of the name Tiah I could think of with no success. What a disappointment. I couldn't find her! I then saw a link to my sister Aubree's wall. One of the top posts was a message from a Tiah Marie telling Aubree she missed her. I clicked on the comment and saw that the picture was of her! Happy day! With the added courage Facebook seems to give, I commented on the post. Before I knew it, she had accepted my friend request and become friend #300 on my friends list. I congratulated her on being #300 and assured her that this accomplishment deserved a reward. The next time I saw her in class I brought her a juice box treat and she brought me a rice crispy treat. I consider this to be one of our earliest direct flirts. After that, interaction became more regular.
One morning before class, she was sitting alone at her table while my table was all having a good time. We teased across the room that she had chosen the wrong table to sit at. We told her table choice was so important that one day she would have to tell her grandchildren that she sat at the wrong table in college. Ironically, that will probably come true, although we didn't know at the time that her grandchildren would also be mine.
Another fortunate happening of the class was that her table was between me and the three hole punch. So whenever I got new papers, I would get the chance to walk past her table to punch holes in them. This allowed me to take extended gazes without arousing extreme suspicion on her part (although still some). This pattern of occasional interaction and uncontrollable glance sneaking continued throughout the semester. I don't think Tiah knew or I admitted just how much I had already fallen in love with her. It's a little embarrassing even now to admit how soon after first seeing Tiah that I could no longer picture living my life without her.

We want to write more of our story, but we realized that we will need to write different topics in different posts to come. It's amazing what details you can remember when you stop and think. :) If you're interested in more posts, check back later for more eh? Again, we're mostly writing these posts so that we can remember our story. Try it out, it's fun to remember positive stuff about life! Love, Us

October Happenings!

Birthdays are meant to be celebrated for like a month, or at least a week. October has a lot of Skelton birthdays, and this is the first year that we haven't been able to be in St. George to celebrate each one. So, a couple weekends ago we went to St. George to celebrate all the birthdays. (It was sad that Aaron & Aarin's family and Travis & Myriam's family couldn't be there though.) While we were visiting, we got to hang out with both of our families a little bit and Bryce got to go golfing with one of his good friends, Dane. We went to lunch with my dad and stepmom and they showed us around the house they're remodeling a little bit, it was fun to see them. We celebrated birthdays at the Skelton's and went out to dinner a couple of times. Woo! It was a lot of fun hanging out with everyone. We don't have very many pictures, but here's a silly few.

Happy hour tradition continues! ;)  Sonic is awesome.

Musical family ;) Happy Birthday month to Aubree, Aeme, Aaron, and Bryce! (And Lela, too!)

We carved pumpkins, that was fun. Everyone's pumpkin turned out awesome. Aubree carved the scary&awesome skull one, Aeme did the ....Eek one ;) and her and Jbz did the incredible/detailed castle one. Jenelle did the cool cat one by herself! Way to go Jbz! Bryce and I did the random hole ones... he made an amazing galaxy look on his. We definitely like the drill-pumpkin-carving idea. It's much easier. Anyway, good job everybody.

Also in October, we went to Kyle&Janae's house to play games and have a soup party. It was fun to hang out with them. (Kyle was one of Bryce's mission companions.)

So, it turns out that we both really like Halloween. I love that it is close to Bryce's birthday. I got some orange, white, and black balloons for his birthday and they worked as Halloween decorations too :) He also really likes the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team, and those are their colors... so win win! I have a really hard time keeping surprises from Bryce, so he got birthday presents for like a week leading up to his birthday haha. It was fun though, because it felt like a long celebration. He got a few movies, game stuff, some clothes, and a few kind gift cards/lunches from family. We went to dinner for his birthday at Cafe Rio:) and had fun going to different places around town. And technically, Bryce got a house for his birthday ;) we're so grateful to be all done moving and done with the process of buying a house. It takes a very long time, but it's way worth it. We're hoping to get our names off the lease of our last place soon, so hopefully we can save that money each month ;\ instead of spending it on a place we're not living in. Having anywhere to live is a great blessing. Moving is a hard transition, but we're settling a little bit at a time into our new place/routine. We really like the new neighborhood and ward, they seem really nice! A couple weeks ago, we spoke in church. (If you're not sure what that is....it's kind of like teaching or bearing testimony of what we believe in front of others of our faith... we're asked to speak by a leader in the church and then we have the opportunity to study a topic and hopefully learn more and prepare a message that we think others might need to hear.) Our topic was "Finding Hope Through Jesus Christ." It was scary to stand up in front of all the people we didn't really know yet, but it seemed to go well. Preparing to give a talk usually teaches the one preparing something that they needed to know for their own situation, so we're grateful to speak.... even though it can be scary haha. Anyway, we haven't met a lot of our neighbors yet, so for Halloween we wanted to be home to hand out candy. We started out the night looking like this...

Make-shift pirate

Bryce wanted to be a Mo-Tab singer.

And... yeah. We didn't really have a big ol' plan for dressing up, but with the little bit of dressed up we were... we think we frightened a few neighbor kids and their parents because they must have had the idea that we dress like that all the time. "What creepy people that just moved in next door." Haha.. anyway, we decided to dress casual after a few people came to trick or treat, so that we could make a better impression on our new neighbors hahaha.... some of those cute little kids faces when they saw us. This Halloween, I felt like an adult. It was weird. We figured out the "adult Halloween secret" ... very clever all you adults from my childhood days. I always wondered why I had a pillowcase full of weird unheard of candy. You people (everyone that has to actually buy candy to hand out to others...) take out the good candy to eat and put the rest in the bowl for those trusting little kids. Talk about trust issues. Just kidding, it makes complete sense. Good one though. Bryce and I had fun, holidays are awesome.

And just to sum up this post.... Happy birthday month (October) to the greatest person I know, my best friend, confidant, and eternal companion... Bryce Skelton! You are amazing Bryce and I'm so grateful to be married to you. Thanks for always knowing how to make me and others laugh :) you are fun and amazing! Here's a video I put together to celebrate Bryce's birthday. ... if you want to watch it :) I love you Bryce!

Happy November!

Moving + General Conference!

(This is somewhat of a venting post....disclaimer.) We were able to move in to our home on September 28. To say it was a long day would be an understatement, but we're so glad to be moved in. The week before that, we were worried that we wouldn't be able to find anyone to help... mainly because Bryce was experiencing major back pain that would make it hard to move everything. We were hoping and praying that we'd be able to find some people that would be willing to help us move. Also, we had found out that almost all of the U-hauls were rented out for that day, so we had to just be okay with picking one up in the evening. We were able to get a lot done in the morning and by time 6 pm rolled around, we had everything packed and a U-haul ready to be packed up. Thankfully, there were 2 guys (one from the old ward and one guy that works with Bryce) that came to help at our old place and their young kids. With all of us, 4 adults and 4 young kids, it took us a while, but we're grateful for all of their help. They seriously saved the day.

We had called the bishop of our new ward that week and asked if there was anyone over there that could come help us unload the truck, and the bishop said he'd try to get a few people together to go to our new place around 8 pm on that Saturday. Anyway, after loading up the truck at our old place, we headed over to the new place to unload. We were amazed and so happy to see that so many were willing to help over there. Another guy from Bryce's work came to help, our friends Kyle and Janae came, and like 7 guys from the new ward including the bishop came! It was a blessing beyond words. We feel very grateful that they took the time to come help us in our time of need. It's a very nice and welcoming ward/neighborhood, and that's very exciting considering that we'll be in this ward longer than any other ward we've been in. (We've moved once every year of our marriage due to different things.) We are grateful for everyone that helped us move, we couldn't have done it without them.

After moving everything in, we talked to Kyle and Janae for a bit and then we drove back to Provo to return the U-haul. It was getting pretty late and we hadn't eaten, so we went to Denny's and splurged on some yummy food to celebrate being done with moving in. That was fun to just chill for a bit. When we got home, we were super excited to get cleaned up and get some sleep. Then came lesson 1 of home ownership..... you get to deal with things yourself, no landlord is going to explain stuff and come to your rescue if something needs working on. Our water heater decided it'd be hilarious to not work and also our heater. Haha good one house. Our house was way cold 63-ish degrees and the water was even colder. We were stinky from moving and a warm shower is nice, but nope.... cold showers were our housewarming gift from our cute new house. We endured the freezing, but I'll admit... I didn't handle it very well... probably because it was 2 in the morning haha. Anyway, reality is great isn't it. Lesson learnt. We went to church the next day just in time to have our names read in to the ward during Sacrament Meeting. Haha..... fun. Bryce asked around to see if there was someone that could teach us how to get our water heater working, and someone from the ward came over thankfully! I don't know if you all know how to do that stuff and I just missed that class in school or what, but we were grateful that our neighbor was kind and helped us turn on our hot water and heater for our home. Next time, we'll be able to figure it out, woo! We unpacked a bunch and then we got to visit with some of Bryce's family for a little while because they were in Spanish Fork for something. It was a fun and eventful weekend. We're glad to live in a place that we can stay as long as we'd like. I know for sure that moving without much help is not that fun, so we've made a little goal to try and help people that need help moving, if we can. Sorry for the venting. It's just to document what happened for our memories sake.

Transitions are kind of tough, but change is good. We're grateful for all of the help we've received, and we're excited to make new friends in the new hood. Woo! We hope you're all doing well. Peace and love!

P.S.-- General Conference (on Oct. 5/6) was amazing. There were so many inspiring and uplifting talks given by those that are called of God to serve His children. They prepare their messages based on what God would like us to learn and hear. I know that we have living Prophets and Apostles on the earth today, and they are concerned for each person and their happiness. If you want to watch/read the words of these wonderful people, go to lds.org and check out General Conference and the Relief Society broadcast talks. You are loved and needed! God is aware of you and He loves you!  (Here are some quotes from the talks. I found these pictures from Deseret Book's Pinterest page.)
